Lecoqworkshop NYC presents master teacher Richard Crawford
Fall Weekend Workshops

Renowned actor, clown and teacher Richard Crawford is giving two workshops this fall that explore the transformative power of mask-play.

Neutral Mask
Saturday, October 24–Sunday, October 25
(10am–5pm both days, with an hour lunch break)
The Neutral Mask challenges actors to use their entire bodies in expressing themselves on stage. Working with the mask enables the performer to discover essential gesture and an economy of movement, as well as create a foundation and reference point for building character. Through a series of improvisational exercises based on techniques created by Jacques Lecoq, actors will become aware of their personal physicality and habits, develop a heightened theatrical presence, and discover the power of stillness. This work is invaluable for actors at all stages of their careers.

Commedia dell'Arte
Saturday, November 7–Sunday, November 8
(10am–5pm both days, with an hour lunch break)
From the market place of 16th century Italy to the bustle of modern-day Times Square, Commedia dell'Arte celebrates the underbelly of human existence. From penny-pinching Pantelone to his clueless servant Arlechinno, Commedia dell'Arte requires the actor to play in a heightened comedic style and find a freedom of play that relies heavily on improvisation. Commedia is a study of archetypes from which all character work stems. This hilarious workshop is ideal for the actor wanting to hone their comedic timing, engage more physically on stage, and develop their improvisational skill.

CircusNYC Richard Crawford studied with Jacques Lecoq and also at Rose Bruford College, London. He is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed New York physical theater ensemble The Flying Machine. He also played the lead in the off-Broadway hit Slava's Snowshow from 2004–2006 and has directed clown work for Cirque du Soleil. He is an award-winning director whose projects have included a Commedia dell'Arte version of Petrushka at Carnegie Hall; The Bourgeois Gentlemen at the UMN/Guthrie, and Comedy of Errors at TheatreWorks, Colorado Springs. He also performed in the 2002 OBIE Winning [Sic] at Soho Rep and as the lead in La Jolla Playhouse's groundbreaking The Adding Machine in 2007. Richard has been teaching for the past twelve years in London, Paris, Santiago, Montreal, and New York. In the U.S. he has taught Neutral Mask, Commedia dell'Arte, and Lecoq Technique at NYU/Tisch, Yale School of Drama, Sarah Lawrence College, Bard College, The Actor's Center, Marymount Manhattan, Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute, Michael Howard Studios, and the University of Minnesota.
