RCCU, now in its eight year, teaches Classical Commedia dell'Arte as close to its original form as we believe it was performed in the 1500s and 1600s. Master mask-maker and Commedia dell'Arte expert, Stanley Allan Sherman will head this summer's workshop.

These are several areas this workshop will concentrate on:
  • Commedia dell'Arte characters
  • Their movement and history of the characters
  • Dances we believe they did
  • Gesture
  • Hebertism
  • Improvisation
  • Juggling
  • Lazzi
  • Mask making (everyone will make their own mask,)
  • Music
  • Physical skills
  • Poetry
  • Prop manipulation
  • Rhythm
  • Scatology
  • Oodles of scenario work
  • And more, all integrated RCCU will again bring in guest experts that specialize in specific aspects of Commedia dell'Arte, including Caroline Copland with the world-famous The New York Baroque Dance Company. Caroline will be teaching dances the Commedia dell'Arte actors performed in Northern Italy in the late 1500s. Also Paul Shipper brings his voice and music expertise to the workshop.

Much of the scenario and improvisation work will be taken from RCCU's new translation of three of Flaminio Scala scenarios believed to be developed by the legendary Gelosi Company 1572 to 1604.

This workshop is geared to the professional performer, actor, director, student and teacher.

Housing for out-of-town students is available this year in the School for Visual Arts student apartments in NYC for the two-week workshop $900*
(*Housing must be confirmed and paid by June 1.)
