THE DELL'ARTE INTENSIVE
Earlybird discount!
only $1,550 if paid by April 1
With Ronlin Foreman, Joe Krienke, Stephanie Thompson, Joan Schirle,
Michael Fields, & guest Donlin Foreman.
A month long immersion in the core actor-training methodology of the school.
5 hours of daily class work + lab hours, $1,650, For actors,
directors, teachers
Our month-long intensive is based on the actor-training methodology of
The Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre. The work of
the actor-creator arises out of silence, darkness, and empty space,
moving into ensemble play and the actor's ability to devise original
work for the stage. The training aims towards creation of The Dynamic
Theatre, a visceral, actor-centered theatre that crosses stylistic
boundaries and informs classic as well as contemporary works, original
as well as adapted works.
The skillful, dynamic, and easeful use of the performative body/voice
is at the core of our curriculum. The goal is an actor whose presence
demonstrates an ability to command the time and space of the stage.
The DAI Intensive is appropriate for actors, dancers, directors,
teachers, and designers. For Summer '09 we will offer a focus on the
‘realms' or territories that are explored in the training of the
physical actor. Students from previous intensives will find fresh
inspirations as well as a great refresher.
The questions for this workshop:
- What is the powerful presence of the actor in the dimension of the
theatre?
- How does energy become action?
- How does the work of gesture, rhythm, shape, tempo, etc as
determined in the great tragic and melodramatic works, give rise to an
actor of powerful intentionality?
- How does the training of the actor in dramatic territories cross
over to the world of the human comedy?
- How does the actor's body and sense of play stretch to meet the
comic archetypes?
Action must always precede analysis. The first step
predetermines the ones to follow. Having made the first eccentric
motion at your birth, you can now look around. Birth is a matter of
territory; identity comes later, through action. Self-awareness in
space and time equals presence. (Self-consciousness leads to
immobility and is the enemy of presence.) From presence, one can
develop the ability to represent.
- Carlo Mazzone-Clementi, Dell'Arte Founder
Week 1 : "NEVER TOO CLEAN"
The essential work of Dell'Arte founder Carlo Mazzone-Clementi, known
as "The Showers," because "you are never too clean to do them."
Through this set of structured improvisations—open,
non-psychological play in the empty space of the stage, the cleansing
of unnecessary habits—the actor becomes a more powerful
presence. The Showers are complimented by the FM Alexander Technique
in vocal/physical work and by movement training with Donlin
Foreman.
Week 2: THE DRAMATIC REALMS: Melodrama Through Tragedy
The training proceeds as presence becomes intention; energy becomes
action. The actor in the space; explorations in space, time, rhythms,
music, and visual forms; the poetic dimension of the protagonist or
tragic hero(ine), epic and sacrifice. Melodrama teaches us about
heightened stakes—"Life, ramped" (actor Ethan Hawke).
Week 3: THE DRAMATIC REALMS: The Human Comedy
With a focus on craft—rhythm, timing, partnership,
entrance/exit, dynamics, the mask, and more—this week engages
the atypical playing of comic types through work on theme and the
timeless situations of the human comedy.
Week 4 : THE DRAMATIC REALMS: Clown & Comic Archetypes
Coming full circle from the cleansing work of The Showers, the actor
researches an organic, non-traditional personage to find the play of
failure. Clown lives not just in eccentric behavior, but also in
authentic play in concert with its partners, for the audience. Work in
duos, trios.
Classes meet Tuesday through Saturday; 5 hours of daily class work +
lab hours
This is not a commedia dell'arte course.

Grand Guignol: Theatre of Terror & Laughter
June 17-21
with Producing Artistic Director Michael Fields and Tyler Olsen
9:30am-12:30pm, 2- 4:30pm daily, $450, All Levels
Once the most popular entertainment in Europe, Grand Guignol is an
exciting theatre form that begat current thriller and horror films.
Rarely taught, this "theatre of laughter and terror" explores our
fascination with the macabre, playing with the violation of society's
taboos. Grand Guignol is wildly physical, intensely psychological, and
filled with gruesome special effects. Explore both the physical
performance styles and skills at the heart of the form, as well as the
special effects (often closely held secrets) that so terrified the
Grand Guignol audiences that a medical doctor was on hand for every
performance to treat those who passed out from shock! The workshop
will culminate in a late-night presentation of horror. Fee includes
materials.
At the Crossroads: Dance & Theatre NEW!
June 17-21
With Master Teacher Donlin Foreman
9:30am-12:30pm, 2-4:30pm + lab daily, $400, For dancers and actors.
Donlin Foreman is a former principal dancer with the Martha Graham
Company, founder of Buglisi-Foreman Dance, now artistic director of
Common Ground Dance Theater. Five days of intense exploration in the
interface between dance and theatre; an investigation into gesture,
emotion, and the kinetic demands of comtemporary physical theatre.
Technique, improvisation and lab work.
Mask Making and Mask Performance
July 20-July 31
with Dell'Arte Instructor Bruce Marrs
9:30am-12:30pm, 2-5pm one week: $400; two weeks: $750, All levels
This very popluar workshop teaches papier mache maskmaking techniques
as well as how the mask and the performer meet. One studio is filled
with masks and mask-making tools and supplies, and a stereo. Another
studio is empty but for mirrors, a few props and costumes, and a
stereo. In the first week we study the craft of character sculpture
and the making of professional quality theatre performance masks,
learning papier-mache technique and viewing other mask-making methods.
In the second week we continue the study of modeling, painting, etc
and study what makes totally engaging and magical mask performance.
The same acting notions particular to successful masked performance
translate back to acting in any style; the vocabulary of the craft
finds a life in the body. Week One is a prerequisite for Week Two.
Class meets six20hours daily, Tue. through Sat.; however, the studios
are open 24/7 for individual or group research. Fee includes
materials. Check out Bruce Marrs' masks at marzillamask.com.
RasaBoxes™ Training Retreat
July 28-August 7
with Rachel Bowditch
Tues.-Sat. 9am-1pm, 3-7pm, $550, All levels
Train in the RasaBoxes&trade approach to become an Athlete of the
Emotions! What are the RasaBoxes? Devised by Richard Schechner, based
on ideas from French theorist Antonin Artaud, the Natyasastra, a
classical Indian treatise on performance, and contemporary scientific
studies on emotion, the RasaBoxes exercises comprise a unique
improvisational, psychophysical approach for finding truthful, fully
embodied sensations of presence and emotional specificity through
direct physical engagement. Working holistically, this technique
unifies mind, body, emotion, and intention to produce performance work
that is viscerally engaging, whether applied to the subtlety of film
acting or the boldness of commedia dell'arte. The RasaBoxes exercises
integrate, rather than separate, acting, movement and voice, engaging
the whole performer in one approach. Rigorous daily training includes
yoga, extensive breath, voice, and movement work, and solo and
ensemble generated performance composition developed from the
RasaBoxes material.
