"Poetic Precision"
A 10-Session Workshop for Actors and Theater Artists
This 10-session acting workshop will focus on the link between clarity
of intention and flight of fancy. Guiding principles of this work
originate with the pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq, and this class will
serve as a foundation for more specialized workshops to be offered in
the future.
Focus: Through improvisational scenes and analysis of movement, we
will examine how psychological intention translates into full-bodied,
physical expression and further, how this precision of
engagement—emotional, physical—creates a vivid theatrical
space. Some questions we will explore include:
- What is the gateway to a flight of creative madness?
- How do we conjure different environments within an empty space?
- When do ordinary objects become extraordinary?
- How is complicity between actors important in creating and
defining space?
Through playful but rigorous research, we will explore the
relationship between precision and possibility, intention, and
poetry.
Classes will be led by Elena Zucker, Artistic Director of The Vertical
Company. Elena is a theater director and playwright who studied Acting
at Middlebury College and went on to complete the two-year Actor
Training Program at the École Internationale de
Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris. She has taught
Lecoq-based acting classes at Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, NYU,
Marymount Manhattan College, SUNY Purchase, Long Island University,
and Brooklyn College.
Workshop Dates: Sunday, 11am-2pm, March 22, March 29, April 5, April
19, April 26, May 3, May 10, May 17, May 24, May 31.
Note: There is no class Easter Sunday, April 12.
Location: New York City, TBA.
Fee: $250. A deposit of $75 is required to hold a space in the class.
The remainder ($175), is due March 22.
Requirements: Participants should have a background in acting,
inclusive of some form of movement technique. Participants should also
be in good physical condition and come to class prepared to
move.
