Workshop Description:
Learn the beautiful and athletic art of aerial fabric! Dance through
the air in one of the circus arts that is fast becoming a mainstream
activity. Aerial fabric caters to all physical body types and
abilities, and this workshop is for complete beginners through
advanced students. If you want a good introduction to the physical
art of aerial fabric or know the basics and want to learn more, this
workshop is for you. Focus is on proper techniques for warming up and
physical preparation to prevent injury and teach the pracitioner how
to improve beyond the average. Because the class will have a maximum
of 12 students, we will be able to accommodate a range of skill levels
and to progress at each student's comfortable pace. We will explore
foot lock skills, sequencing and creative transitioning, plus
progressions from beginning to advanced drops and simple through
complex choreographic options.
About the instructors:
Elsie Smith and Serenity Smith Forchion founded their company NIMBLE
ARTS after returning home from a four-year tour as duo trapezists in
Cirque du Soleil's Saltimbanco. They are identical twins
specializing in aerial acrobatics. Their teaching and performing
resumes include Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus, Circus of the
Kids, the New Pickle Circus, Pilobolus, the Actor's Gym, Circus
Juventus, Umo Ensemble, and Canopy Aerial Dance Studio. Serenity
helped found the San Francisco School of Circus Arts and was Pilates
captain for Saltimbanco, where she worked closely with
physical therapists to promote injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Elsie taught aerials at the SFSCA, has a coaches certification in
trampoline, and has choreographed for the UGA Dance department, Circus
Smirkus, and Sea World, among others. They founded the New England
Center for Circus Arts in Brattleboro, VT, which offers circus and
movement classes to recreational and professional students of all
ages. Their students are members of such prestigious circus companies
as Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, Cirque
Productions, Circus Smirkus, and LAVA. They continue to perform and
teach around the world together and with their Nimble Arts troupe.
The sisters were awarded a Bronze medal at the First International
Circus Festival in Albacete, Spain for their unique spinning duo
trapeze act.
