Job Description
Artistic/Managing Director, Prescott Circus Theatre
The Prescott Circus Theatre is an exciting and innovative after school
circus arts education program serving youth in Oakland, California
since 1984. The program's original site, Prescott Elementary School,
is the home of the performing company, comprised of 4th and 5th
graders who train, rehearse, and entertain throughout the year.
Circus skills include juggling, stilting, unicycling, acrobatics,
balancing, hip hop dance, Hambone body percussion, clowning/acting,
and performance production. The Prescott Circus also offers
satellite programs at six additional Oakland schools. The program
model combines best practices in youth development with a culturally
conscious pedagogy and curriculum. The Prescott Circus is a
well-known and highly valued community asset. Our young stars
entertain over 30,000 fans annually. Staff and students alike share
the core values of the Prescott Circus Theatre: "Hard Work, Teamwork,

The Prescott Circus Theatre is currently seeking qualified applicants
for a 75% position as Artistic/Managing Director for our performing
company at Prescott School in West Oakland to provide direct services
to youth in this well-established year-round program. The
Artistic/Managing Director will also serve as co-leader of the
Prescott Circus Theatre organization, reporting laterally to the
Executive Director and the Satellite Program Director. High learning

Artistic/Managing Director responsibilities include:
Direct Services with Youth
- Lead performing company training, rehearsal, and performance
production sessions 3-4 afternoons per week using best practices of
youth development and risk management
- Create performance pieces in partnership with teaching artists and
youth performers
- Prepare students to lead circus workshops for younger students and
to interact with the public at various events
- Organize and implement homework support program
- Organize and implement supplementary classes with guest artists,
including Junior Circus program
- Work with Leadership Team students currently in middle and high
school to develop new projects and assist with training sessions and
performances
- Direct students in public appearances at approximately 40 venues
annually, primarily on week-ends
- Organize and lead annual events such as family pot luck, overnight
study retreat, showcase or special event during spring break, and
5-week summer circus camp
Management and Organization
- Organize and implement all aspects of recruitment, retention,
scheduling, coordination of facilities and equipment, record keeping,
and evaluatios
- Manage all arrangements for performing events or appearancess
- Prepare monthly and quarterly reports of participant data and
activitiess
- Communicate regularly with parents, community, school personnel,
after-school staff, and medias
- Maintain accurate expense records and receipts; work within budgets
- Work with Executive Director, Satellite Program Director, and
Advisory Committee in strategic planning process to facilitate
organizational development, capacity building, and program
expansion
Qualifications:
- B.A. degree, related discipline preferreds
- Teaching experience, urban setting preferreds
- Performing arts background or experience, Circus Arts preferreds
- Creative energy balanced with strong organizational skills and
experiences
- Commitment to maintaining a nurturing, safe, familial communitys
- Cultural competence or willingness to learns
- Computer skills or ability to learn: Word, Excel, data base managements
- Ability to develop and sustain positive relationships
- Strong communication skills
Additional Desired Skills:
- Intention for long-term commitment
- Conflict resolution experience
- Theatre technical expertise
- Digital technical expertise: photography, video, music
- California Teaching Credential a plus
- Experience with West Oakland community and/or city of Oakland a plus
- Experience working in public school settings a plus
